POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for managing the renovation, rehabilitation, or construction of affordable housing units and the on-site construction training of young people, including the supervision of the construction trainers or crew leaders, and to teach youth the skills necessary to do gut rehabilitation or construction on a house and to provide supportive guidance and encourage the development of their leadership skills.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaches the national construction certification curriculum to trainees using prescribed materials.
  2. Administers module tests and track and report participant results, providing remedial help where needed.
  3. Ensures quality instruction of construction skills including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry.
  4. Ensures worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper constructions techniques and all trained safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  5. Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction.
  6. Participate in the development of project based curriculum that includes construction.
  7. Supports the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both into building site activities whenever possible.
  8. Provides supervision in the academic and/or leadership components of the program when needed.
  9. Initiates and schedules OSHA, first aid, and CPR training for all participants.

 

 

 

Construction and Civic Service Projects:

  1. Ensures a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been presented, thoroughly discussed, and signed by build partners and other civic organizations prior to start of all projects.
  2. Develops detailed construction plan and schedule and coordinate and monitor the progress and quality of work.
  3. Responsible for overall safety enforcement and remedies any potential safety hazards identified in the MOU, prior to start of work.
  4. Develops and supervises the safety committee.
  5. Ensures construction projects meet grant criteria of being 90% low income housing.
  6. Attends periodic build partner board meetings, to identify challenges and keep lines of communication open.
  7. Coordinates with partner project manager to develop a detailed construction plan and schedule, material needs, and other information as required.
  8. Identifies private contractors or developers who might be interested in collaborative partnerships with YouthBuild and willing to work with young people as construction trainees.
  9. Assists partner(s) in determination of labor and resource requirements for projects, as needed.
  10. Sets worksite behavioral standards and models appropriate behavior and methods of addressing problems at the construction site.
  11. Leads and supervises students in community service projects, as requested.
  12. Keeps YouthBuild Program Coordinator informed of construction progress and challenges.
  13. Keeps construction certification report up-to-date; provides required certifications statistics to designated YouthBuild Staff on a quarterly basis, and applies for participant certifications, upon completion of the curriculum.
  14. Implements and accurately maintains a system to track student's progress and assess their skills and abilities.
  15. Completes daily and weekly log, and construction report section of weekly report form, in a timely manner.
  16. Maintains inventory of all tools, supplies and equipment used on the job daily.
  17. Keeps an accurate vehicle mileage log.
  18. Ensures all vehicles receive scheduled maintenance and are in good working order.
  19. All other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Minimum of five years professional work experience working with all elements of housing construction required.
  2. Knowledge of methods and skills in the use of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools, and common hazards and necessary safety precautions required.
  3. Skilled at reading and interpreting instructions, diagrams, sketches, and blueprints.
  4. Proven ability to present and provide instruction in areas related to remodeling and new construction.
  5. Ability to relate to, lead, and instruct populations of young adults, ages 16 24, who have become disconnected from traditional education and career preparation.
  6. Passion for working with young people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds to reorient their lives, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in their community.
  7. Must be a flexible, energetic, and positive individual who is committed to the education and development of youth in a high quality respectful environment.
  8. Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred.
  9. Excellent verbal, written and computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Internet, and email.
  10. OSHA or MIOSHA certified with first aid and CPR training desired.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must possess a valid S C Driver's License to operate a vehicle from the SHA pool.
  2. Must be insurable by the Authority's fleet insurance carrier. Must be bondable.
